Framing thoughts: Death Portraits

I just had a brief thought on framing my images for the gallery, and so I am posting these here. If the images are to be quite morbid, or at least dark, it may be interesting to contrast them with lovely frames – like victorian death portraits.

It is not the subject matter so much as Witkin’s style that I find inspiring, especially is ink sketches of the intended photograph. The colour combinations are not light in any way… I want to say they have a primal feel, but that feels condescending. Feral?

The Wicker Man and Pagan Imagery

The animal masks are what I find most intriguing about these images, but I wanted to collect other pagan symbolism as well, in case it turns out to be useful in my work.

I really, really like the idea of transformation via mask, taking on the spirit of another entity. Animal stereotypes also come into play, at least for me.
